How to calculate reseller profit

Profit is what is left after the sale after all fees and costs.

  • Fees = selling price x fee percentage + fixed fee
  • Cost = purchase price + shipping + supplies
  • Profit = selling price – fees – cost
  • Margin = profit / selling price
  • Return on cost = profit / cost
  • Profit per hour = profit / (minutes / 60)

Worked example

You buy an item for $8.00 and sell it for $35.00. The platform takes 13% plus $0.30, which is $4.85. Shipping is $6.00 and supplies are $0.50, so your costs are $14.50. Profit is 35 – 4.85 – 14.50 = $15.65, a margin of 44.7% and a return of 107.9% on what you spent. If sorting and packing take 15 minutes, the profit is $62.60 per hour of work. At 40 items a month the profit is $626.00. The break-even selling price is $17.01.

Hourly profit is the figure many resellers forget. A $5 profit on an item that takes an hour is a poor use of time, even if the return on cost looks high. Track your time on a few items to get a realistic number, then decide which items are worth sourcing.

Assumptions & limits

  • The fee percentage is one combined figure for your platform. Platforms differ in how they charge for the item, shipping and tax, so use the combined rate that fits you and check the fee page.
  • Sales tax, income tax, returns and refunds are not included.
  • Your time is counted only if you enter minutes per item. Sourcing travel and storage costs are not included.
  • The default values are examples. Replace them with your own figures.
  • It is a planning tool, not financial or tax advice. Rates last reviewed November 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate reseller profit?

Subtract fees, what you paid, shipping and supplies from the selling price. The calculator also shows margin and return on cost.

What is a good profit margin for resellers?

It depends on the item and your time. Many resellers look for a return on cost of 100 percent or more, but check profit per hour too.

What is the difference between margin and return on cost?

Margin divides profit by the selling price. Return on cost divides profit by what you spent.

How do I find my break-even price?

Add your costs and fixed fee, then divide by one minus the fee percentage. The calculator shows this price.

Should I count my time?

Yes. Enter the minutes you spend per item to see profit per hour.

Which fee should I use?

Use the total of the selling and payment fees for your platform. The platform calculators on this site show the common ones.
