How to calculate a discount

A discount takes a percentage off the original price.

  • Sale price = original x (1 – discount %)
  • Amount saved = original – sale price
  • Two discounts = original x (1 – first) x (1 – second)
  • Percent off = (original – sale) / original x 100
  • With tax = sale price x (1 + tax rate)

Worked example

An item costs $80 and is 25% off. The sale price is 80 x 0.75 = $60.00 and you save $20.00. With 8% sales tax the price is $64.80. If you also have a 10% coupon on the sale price, the final price is $54.00, and the total discount is 32.50%, not 35%, because the coupon applies to the lower price.

To find the percent off from two prices, enter an original price of $80 and a sale price of $60. The discount is (80 – 60) / 80 = 25.00%. This is handy for checking whether a sale is as good as it looks. Compare the sale price with the usual price at other stores, and watch for tax and shipping that can cancel the savings. Stacked discounts are not always allowed, so check the store rules before you count on them. Retail sales often use a high original price, so look at the price you would pay at a few stores before you decide. When you compare two offers, work out the final price with tax and shipping for both, because the larger percent off is not always the lower price. For a quick estimate, take 10% by moving the decimal point, then double or halve it to get 20%, 5% or 15%.

Assumptions & limits

  • A second discount is applied to the price after the first, which is how most stores handle coupons. Some stores apply them differently.
  • Sales tax is applied to the final sale price. Some places tax the price before a coupon.
  • Shipping, fees and rounding on receipts are not included.
  • Tax rates vary by place and change, so enter your own.
  • The calculator does not check whether a discount is real. Compare prices before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by one minus the discount percent. 25% off $80 is $60.

How do I find the percent off?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100.

Do two discounts add up?

No. The second applies to the reduced price, so 25% and 10% make 32.5% off.

Is sales tax added before or after the discount?

Usually after, on the sale price, but rules vary by place and store.

How do I find the original price?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount. The Reverse Sales Tax Calculator uses a similar idea for tax.

Can I use it for markups?

No. A markup is a different calculation. Use the Wholesale or Craft Pricing calculators.
