How to convert cat years to human years
A common rule gives a cat 15 human years in the first year, 9 more in the second, and 4 more for each year after that.
- Up to 1 year: 15 x age
- 1 to 2 years: 15 + 9 x (age – 1)
- Over 2 years: 24 + 4 x (age – 2)
Worked example
A cat that is 5 years old has a human age of 24 + 4 x (5 – 2) = 36 years. At 10 years, the figure is 24 + 4 x 8 = 56. A cat of 6 months is about 7.5 in human years, and a cat of 15 is about 76.
The rule is simple and easy to remember, but it is only a guide. Cats mature fast in the first two years and then age more slowly, which is why the first years count for much more than later ones. Indoor cats often live longer than outdoor cats, and breed and health matter too. Life stages are a better guide for care than a human age. Kittens need frequent meals and shots, adults need steady care, and seniors benefit from checkups at least once a year so that kidney, thyroid, dental and joint problems are found early. A cat that is 15 years old is around 76 in human terms, so food, litter and play may all need to change. Softer beds, lower litter box sides and easy access to food and water are small steps that help an older cat. Keep notes of any change in appetite, thirst or weight, and share them with your vet at each visit.
