How to convert salary to hourly pay
The hourly rate is the salary divided by the number of hours worked in the year.
- Hours per year = hours per week x weeks
- Hourly rate = annual salary / hours per year
- Weekly pay = annual salary / weeks
- Daily pay = weekly pay / days per week
- Monthly pay = annual salary / 12
Worked example
A salary of $60,000 for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year. The hourly rate is 60,000 / 2,080 = $28.85. Weekly pay is $1,153.85, daily pay at 5 days is $230.77 and monthly pay is $5,000.00.
If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, enter 50 weeks. The same salary is spread over 2,000 hours, so the hourly rate is $30.00. Use the higher number when you compare a salaried offer with an hourly job that does not pay for time off.
Compare any job offer on the same basis. A salaried role with long hours may pay a lower hourly rate than a role that looks smaller on paper, while an hourly job might add overtime. Change the hours per week to see how the rate moves, and add the value of benefits separately for a fuller picture.
Assumptions & limits
- The result is gross pay before taxes, health insurance and retirement contributions.
- The calculator divides the salary evenly over the hours you enter. If you regularly work extra hours without extra pay, your real hourly rate is lower, so enter your true hours.
- Paid vacation and holidays are included when you use 52 weeks. Many people prefer to compare on paid weeks only.
- Benefits, bonuses and equity are not counted unless you add them to the salary.
- A common shortcut divides the salary by 2,080. That equals this calculation for 40 hours over 52 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert salary to hourly?
Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. A $60,000 salary over 2,080 hours is $28.85 an hour.
Why divide by 2,080?
Forty hours a week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. Dividing the salary by 2,080 gives the hourly rate for a full-time year.
How do I convert hourly to salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours per week and the weeks per year. $28.85 times 2,080 is about $60,000.
