How to calculate overtime pay

Overtime pay is the overtime hours times the hourly rate times the multiplier.

  • Regular hours = the smaller of hours worked and the threshold
  • Overtime hours = hours worked – threshold, if positive
  • Regular pay = regular hours x hourly rate
  • Overtime pay = overtime hours x hourly rate x multiplier
  • Total = regular pay + overtime pay

Worked example

You earn $20 an hour and work 50 hours in a week. The first 40 hours are regular, so regular pay is 40 x 20 = $800.00. The other 10 hours are overtime at time and a half, which is $30 an hour, so overtime pay is 10 x 30 = $300.00. Your total pay for the week is $1,100.00, an average of $22.00 per hour.

If your job pays double time after 12 hours in a day, work out each day separately, or enter a higher multiplier for the extra hours. Bonuses and shift pay can change the rate used for overtime, so ask your payroll team how they calculate it.

Assumptions & limits

  • Gross pay before taxes and deductions. Take-home pay will be lower.
  • Federal law generally requires time and a half over 40 hours in a workweek for covered, non-exempt employees. Some states, such as those with daily overtime rules, and some contracts go further, so the threshold and the multiplier are editable.
  • The calculator uses one hourly rate for all hours. Shift differentials, bonuses and piece-rate pay can change the regular rate used for overtime.
  • Whether you are owed overtime depends on your job and your state. This is an arithmetic tool and not legal advice.
  • For a salaried job, use the Salary to Hourly Calculator to find your hourly rate first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate overtime pay?

Multiply the overtime hours by your hourly rate and the multiplier. At $20 an hour, 10 overtime hours at time and a half pay $300.

What is time and a half?

It means 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour.

When does overtime start?

Federal law uses 40 hours in a workweek for covered employees. Some states count daily hours, and some employers set their own rules.

Does overtime include breaks?

Only paid time counts as hours worked. Unpaid meal breaks are normally left out.

Can I use it for double time?

Yes. Enter 2 as the multiplier.

Is overtime taxed more?

Overtime is taxed like other wages. It can feel larger because the higher pay is withheld at the same rates, but it is not a separate tax.
