How to calculate Shopify fees
Your Shopify cost is the plan price plus the fees charged on each order.
- Monthly sales = orders x average order value
- Card fees = sales x card rate + orders x fixed fee
- Gateway fees = sales x third-party rate
- Total cost = plan price + card fees + gateway fees
- Cost per order = total cost / orders
Worked example
A store on the Basic plan pays $39.00 a month and 2.9% + $0.30 on card payments. It gets 200 orders with an average value of $60, so the monthly sales are $12,000.00. Card fees are 12,000 x 2.9% + 200 x 0.30 = $408.00. The total cost is 39 + 408 = $447.00, which is 3.72% of sales or $2.23 per order.
If the same store used an outside gateway with a 2% third-party fee, that would add $240.00 a month, so the cost rises to $687.00 before the gateway own fees. Compare plans by changing the plan price and the card rate. A higher plan can lower the card rate, so it pays off once your sales are large enough to cover the higher monthly price.
Assumptions & limits
- The default figures come from the Shopify pricing page checked on November 5, 2026. They show Basic at $39 a month with 2.9% + 30 cents online, and lower card rates on higher plans. Plans, yearly discounts and rates change, so edit the inputs to match your own plan.
- The calculator covers the plan price, card fees and third-party gateway fees only. Apps, themes, domains, shipping labels and currency conversion are separate.
- It does not include sales tax, refunds, chargebacks or payment disputes.
- Orders are assumed to be spread evenly. Real months vary.
- It is a planning tool, not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify cost per month?
The Basic plan was listed at $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly, with higher plans at higher prices. Check the Shopify pricing page for current figures.
What are Shopify card processing fees?
The pricing page lists 2.9% + 30 cents on the Basic plan for online cards. Higher plans list lower rates.
Is there a fee for using another payment gateway?
The pricing page lists a third-party transaction fee, which was 2% on Basic. Enter it in the gateway field.
Is a higher plan worth it?
It can be once your sales are high enough that the lower card rate saves more than the extra monthly price. Run the calculator for both plans.
Do fees apply to refunds?
Refund and dispute handling can vary, so check the Shopify terms. This calculator does not model them.
Does the cost include apps and themes?
No. Add them to the plan price if you want a total monthly cost.
