How to calculate landed cost

Landed cost adds every cost of delivering the goods to your door.

  • Goods = unit cost x quantity
  • Duty = goods x duty rate
  • Landed cost = goods + freight + duty + insurance + other fees
  • Per unit = landed cost / quantity
  • Margin = (selling price – landed cost per unit) / selling price

Worked example

You buy 500 units at $10 each, so the goods cost $5,000. Freight is $600, duty is 5% of the goods which is $250, insurance is $50 and other fees are $100. The total landed cost is $6,000.00, or $12.00 per unit. That is 20.0% more than the product price. If you sell each unit for $25, your profit is $13.00 per unit and your margin is 52.0%.

Run the numbers before you place a large order. A low supplier price can hide high freight or duty, and the landed cost per unit is the figure to use when you set your selling price. If you ship in several batches, calculate each shipment separately because freight and fees change from one to the next.

Assumptions & limits

  • Duty is charged on the product value as a single percentage. Real duties can use other bases, and some products also have additional tariffs or fees, so check the current rules.
  • The duty rate is an input and the calculator does not look up product codes. Use the US International Trade Commission HTS search or a customs broker for your item.
  • Freight and fees are given as totals for the shipment and shared evenly across units.
  • Currency conversion, payment fees and interest on money tied up in stock are not included.
  • Storage and last-mile delivery costs after arrival are separate.

Frequently asked questions

What is landed cost?

It is the total cost of getting a product to your door, including the product price, freight, duty, insurance and fees.

How do I calculate landed cost per unit?

Add all the costs of the shipment and divide by the number of units. The calculator does this for you.

How do I find the duty rate?

Use the Harmonized Tariff Schedule from the US International Trade Commission, or ask a customs broker for the rate for your product.

Does landed cost include shipping to the customer?

No. It stops when the goods reach you. Shipping to your customer is a separate cost.

Why does landed cost matter?

Using the supplier price alone hides freight and duty, which can make a product look more profitable than it is.

Can I use it for domestic goods?

Yes. Set duty to zero and enter freight and other fees.
