How to calculate cost per lead

Cost per lead is the spend divided by the number of leads. The later steps follow the leads through your funnel.

  • Cost per lead = spend / leads
  • Qualified leads = leads x qualify rate
  • Customers = qualified leads x close rate
  • Cost per customer = spend / customers
  • Return on spend = (customers x deal value – spend) / spend

Worked example

A campaign costs $3,000 and brings in 120 leads, so the cost per lead is $25.00. If 40% qualify, that is 48 qualified leads, and the cost per qualified lead is $62.50. A 25% close rate gives 12 customers, so each customer costs $250.00. At an average deal value of $1,500 the campaign brings in $18,000.00, a return on spend of 500%.

The cheapest leads are not always the best. A channel with a low cost per lead but a poor close rate can cost more per customer than a pricey channel with strong buyers. Compare channels by cost per customer and track the numbers every month. If your sales cycle is long, match each campaign to the customers it produced later, so the result is not understated.

Assumptions & limits

  • The calculator uses single average rates for qualification and closing. Real rates differ by channel and by season.
  • The revenue figure is based on deal value, not margin, so check profit separately.
  • Sales cycles can mean customers arrive months after the spend, so a short period may understate the return.
  • Lead definitions vary. A lead can be a form fill, a call or a sign-up, so use the same one each time.
  • The default numbers are examples, not benchmarks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cost per lead?

Divide the campaign spend by the number of leads. $3,000 for 120 leads is $25 per lead.

What is a good cost per lead?

It depends on your industry and what a customer is worth. Compare with your cost per customer and deal value.

What is a qualified lead?

It is a lead that meets your criteria, such as budget, need and timing, so that sales will follow it up.

Is cost per lead the same as CAC?

No. Cost per lead counts leads. CAC counts only the customers you won.

How can I lower my cost per lead?

Improve the offer and landing page, target better audiences and test the form length.

Why does the close rate matter?

Because it turns leads into customers. A cheap lead that never closes is not cheap.
